A picture is worth a thousand words, so here's a bunch of photos that document how we recently restored and stained a deck.
First we moved all the furniture off of the deck. I wish I'd taken a photo of all the stuff while it was on there!

Then we cleaned the deck:
(our mascot on this job was a cute concrete lab)

Nails are reset and wood is replaced where necessary.

The deck is then given an appropriate number of days to dry out.
Next we protect the home to keep stain splatters off of it. Only then do we start applying the stain!

Particular attention is paid to details - even the support columns underneath the deck are coated with a protective layer of stain. (I've always been a perfectionist.)

Then we put the furniture back, and voila! It looks like a brand new deck - one that you will want to use again and enjoy like you did when it was first built.

We've been using Cabot's deck stain for over 20 years. It has performed the best for us, and believe me, we have tried almost every deck stain available!

This particular deck took six gallons of stain.
