We brush the deck stain into every square inch of decking. This fills cracks and holes. Most painters consider this old school and inefficient, however, I would rather work the stain into the wood than have it merely lay on top when sprayed on. I have been painting for 42 years and I consider it a compliment when other painters call me “old school.”
